As they say, the title says it all :)

is there actually any difference between Industrial Relations and Employee Relations, or do they both mean the same thing?

Industrial Relations is the Old school title.....The more fluffy and less confrontational title is employee relations. Inherently there is no difference only in a practitioners abilities, but there is now more of a push for Employee Relations managers etc to take on more of a touchy feely HR tact to issues. IR Practitioners tend to take a more clinical and legislative view.....From my perspective I use the title "Industrial Relations" because that is what people know and that is how it is spoken about in the media etc. Titles are just that, titles. It's the practical application of skills on the ground that make the practitioner. Just MHO of course.
