Default Gen Y are they really so hot?

What is everyone's thoughts on Gen Y, the hot topic these days?

Smart Company ran a survey with Roy Morgan Research and Dun & Bradstreet, which is an interesting read. What was of real interest was the list of tips to retain Gen Y:-
1. Retention starts with recruitment.
2. Be flexible.
3. Provide the ‘why’.
4. Provide regular and constructive feedback.
5. Set clear career paths and determine goals.
6. Coaching and mentoring appeals to this demographic.
7. Salary, salary, salary.
8. Develop an organisational culture that is inclusive of everyone.
9. Watch your words.
10. Practice what you preach.

Is this really any different to other employers?

Not at all, there is not one point there that doesn't apply to any other workforce demographic. Equally there will be the similar exceptions in all demographics, i.e there will be some people for whom salary isn't everything, but that doesn't just apply to Gen Y.

I tend to agree with this Fairfax article titled
"Gap in generalisations, not generations"
