The Federal Government are inquiring into a national maternity leave scheme. Workplace Relations Minister Julia Gillard has promised that the inquiry will be “short –term” and “focused”.
Although Ms Gillard could not mention an appropriate period of leave, she did confirm that big businesses would still have to continue their current contribution to tax-payer funded schemes.
The Government will also consider small business in their inquiry taking care not to add additional load.
“We want to build on what’s there, not substitute for what’s there”, she said.
