Default Huge pay gap for women

The issue of inequality has resurfaced with new figures that show that female business executives are, on a weekly average, earning 35% less than their male counterparts.

The report from the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA) found that only 7% of high income positions were held by women.

Examining the remunerations of executive positions from the ASX top 200 companies listed, the study showed that the female median salary was lower than that of men, and in no industry were they likely to earn more than men.

The Minister for the Status of Women Tanya Plibersek was shocked and disappointed at the results. Ms Plibersek believed the issue to be for business, saying that it was out of the government’s control.

"Frankly, I don't know how business can explain this and I think it would be well worth boards of directors and shareholders giving some consideration to this problem".

Ms Plibersek says the gap is more distinct in the top echelons of business, however the report found inequity at all levels of the workforce.

The articles from The Age and ABC News provide more statistical analysis and professional viewpoints.
