    Default Ending Casual Employment

    We have a casual employee working irregular and unsystematic hours. Originally engaged for 1 year as a casual and has continued on a casual basis for another 1.5 years, working a hours on a needs basis. We're now in a situation where we don't require him anymore.

    What is best practice? Give him a letter confirming no further work or verbally let him know?

    If best practice is in writing, does anyone have a letter template they could share?

    You can verbally inform the employee you have no further work for him at this time. If situation likely not to be long term, then just advise that if and when business picks up again, you will contact him for further work if he is available, but make promises - this way he let down nicely. True casuals ie who, as you have stated, work irregular and unsystematic hours, do not require to be "formally" terminated - they are employed by the hour so only one hour's notice is required. Some remain inactive on payroll for months and longer ie are never officially terminated. If you absolutely want to write a letter keep it brief ..."Further to our discussion on ??date, this confirms our advice that we have no further requirement for your services" or words to that effect. Personally I probably would not issue anything in writing but up to you.
