Hi Everyone,

I am currently wondering what and where I should look at further development. I have a Masters in HR Mgmt and have just been RPL for a Cert IV in OHS. I am wondering if I should further advance OHS education by completing a Diploma in OHS, and what other development opportunities there are within HR that I could look at.

Any advice or suggestions on further development.
Thanks Belinda

Belinda, there is a point where you can become over-academically qualified. Not knowing your work history or practical experience I would suggest (on assumption) that it would be better to get some runs on the board with a big company and see where it takes you. All the diplomas in the world don't make up for on the ground experience. Purely my view of course......

Agree with the above comment, would add though that as well as working with a big company, look to get experience directly managing others as this has been a big stumbling block for colleagues I've seen try to advance their career.

If you want to specialise in an area like OHS, go for the extra study, however keep in mind you run the risk of pigeon holing your career in that area with too high of a specialised qualification which can limit opportunities unless you are prepared to do even further studies in other areas such as IR, Employment Law, Rem & Ben, L&D etc
