We have a position which was made redundant 2 years ago under the title of Chief Financial Officer and now are looking at reinstating that title to another employee, but the role is slightly altered due to differing specialties of the employees. Are we able to use the same title if the role is different to the original one that was made redundant?

From a common sense perspective, you would think the answer would be "yes", because things change over time, and two years is very a long time in the current climate of economic uncertainty. But we all know that the FWA isn't necessarily based upon common sense!

Hopefully one of our resident IR specialists can give a more definitive answer.

Title doesn't mean anything. It is the specifics of the position (tasks, Responsibilities, Accountabilities, Financial Delegations, Budget etc) that is the key focus. If its 2 years later do you fear the previous employee seeking some sort of compensation? If so I can safely say they would have no hope at all....

To give you an idea, I had a client that had a group of employees performing exactly the same tasks, one of them was adamant they should be given the title "Senior"...When asked why the only answer they could come up with was "because I've been here the longest"....

If your truly concerned why not change it "Chief Accounting Officer" or "Chief _____ Officer"........
