Approval for the new system of IR laws went through last week however it is still unclear how the system will work for the private sector.

States could refer their powers to the Commonwealth, as Victoria did 10 years ago or they could pass identical laws. Although NSW has yet to decide which on which option, NSW Industrial Relations Minister John Della Bosca favours a national system.

The Federal Government believes that the new national system will be more straightforward, allowing employees to work across state borders with ease.

A ministerial meeting heard more of Labor’s continuing quest to completely ban future creations of Australian Workplace Agreements. Labor also announced it’s proposal to replace the current workplace system with a new one by January 1, 2010.

Frankly, I think the more national laws and schemes we get the better! It is absurd that we have different laws in each State.
