Workplace Relations Minister Julia Gillard announced today that building productivity will become the focus of the new industrial relations system.

“One of the great problems for this nation is that we haven't had increasing productivity - we've had poor productivity performances”, Ms Gillard said.

The announcement has followed after Wednesday’s inflation rate rise and the swift assignment of a new IR unit, whose key role will be to accelerate Labor’s aim to create a nationally consistent industrial relations system.

Ms Gillard said "The government is obviously going to lead by example with a prudent budget and we are calling on employers and employees and trade unions to also show restraint."

Ms Gillard and her counterparts will meet next week to discuss the Labor’s planned reforms, which will include OHS and workers’ compensation laws.
