Would be interested to know what people find to be effective forms of advertising for accounting recruitment.

There are many methods to try using - my background is mostly in IT, HR, Banking and Finance recruitment...

1. Job Boards - there are many out there, and some free that work quite well. Specifically for Accounting/Finance have a look at
http://www.seek.com.au
http://www.mycareer.com.au
http://www.efinancialcareers.com.au
http://www.nowhiring.com.au
and of course - YOUR OWN WEBSITE - post your roles on there too!

2. The newspaper such as MyCareer in the Age or other papers is like throwing your money down the drain - you could pay up to 5-10k for a block colour advert. Unless this is a very big paying role, you are wasting money.

Knowing many accountants, most of them are smart enough to look online, and also in their own trade organisations magazines, CPA/CA/Tax etc etc

I have recently found that the only way to find good Accountants is through recruitment agencies. I have tried newspaper and internet advertising to no avail. All the good ones are currently in roles and are only passively looking for work, they wait for the agencies to call them with opportunities. It's unfortunate as it is quite a hight cost, but if you think about the time you waste going through all of the other options first, you may aswell go straight to a reputable agency. Hope this helps.

I have recently found that the only way to find good Accountants is through recruitment agencies.

The reality is, recruitment agencies just do recruitment, all day every day. The good ones make it their business to find the best candidates, before you do!

A broad search on Seek for accountants shows 18,000+ jobs nationally. Most of those jobs will be advertised by recruitment agencies who pay as little at $30 per ad, so they can afford to constantly re-post their ads. As an employer paying job pack rates at best, it's difficult to compete with the agencies. As you can see, with those sorts of numbers you have to be really lucky to attract a good candidate and even then they will have multiple options.

The first three I would agree with, the fourth seems a bit of odd choice for accountancy jobs - have you had any success with it?

I did a search for accountancy jobs on nowhiring and it returned just 94 jobs nationally.

Nevertheless, a small number of jobs might be appealing if they were all quality jobs, but of that 94 there was an Accounts Payable Clerk from Kane Consulting 13 times, and a job titled "Are you looking for a sea change???" 12times, also from Kane Consulting. As a prospective job seeker that doesn't exactly turn me on.

The Australian accounting recruitment market is particularly challenging at present, and websites such as SEEK only muddy the water further, due to a saturation of repetitive ads!

As Accounting Practice Manager for LINK Recruitment, I have been recruiting for the senior accounting and finance market in Melbourne for 5 years now, and definitely believe that to match talented candidates with the top accounting jobs, it is a case of who (rather than what) you know.
